Zemaitis guitars are renowned for their distinctive design, exceptional craftsmanship, and unique sound. They were created by a Lithuanian-born luthier named Tony Zemaitis, who gained recognition for his innovative and highly ornate guitar designs. Let's delve into the history of Zemaitis guitars.

Tony Zemaitis was born in 1935 in London, England, to Lithuanian parents. He began his career as a guitar repairman and eventually started building his own instruments in the mid-1960s. Zemaitis initially gained attention for his high-quality repairs and modifications, which caught the eye of influential guitarists of the time.

In the late 1960s, Tony Zemaitis shifted his focus to crafting unique electric guitars. He gained fame for his pioneering use of metal tops, which became a signature feature of Zemaitis guitars. These metal tops were typically made from aluminum or silver and featured intricate engravings, often depicting elaborate scenes or patterns.

The first notable musician to embrace Zemaitis guitars was Ronnie Wood of The Rolling Stones. Wood's use of Zemaitis guitars in the 1970s brought significant attention to Tony's work, and many other renowned guitarists followed suit.

Throughout the 1970s and 1980s, Zemaitis guitars gained popularity among a wide range of musicians, including Eric Clapton, George Harrison, Keith Richards, and Jimmy Page. The distinct aesthetic appeal, coupled with exceptional craftsmanship, made Zemaitis guitars highly sought after by collectors and players alike.

After Tony Zemaitis passed away in 2002, his legacy was carried on by his son, Tony Zemaitis Jr. Tony Jr. continued to build guitars under the Zemaitis name, preserving his father's meticulous attention to detail and commitment to quality.

In recent years, Zemaitis guitars have continued to be crafted by a select group of skilled luthiers who closely adhere to Tony Zemaitis' original designs and techniques. While the company has changed hands a few times, the distinctive Zemaitis guitar legacy lives on, and their instruments are still regarded as highly sought-after and collector's items.
