Silvertone electric guitars are one of the great American origin stories — Sears catalog instruments that put a electric guitar within reach of a generation of kids who couldn't afford a Fender or Gibson, and in doing so helped launch more careers than anyone will ever be able to count. Kurt Cobain learned on one. Jack White built a mythology around one. The list goes on because the guitars were everywhere, and everywhere meant that everybody who wanted to play could.
What's easy to miss is how good some of them actually are. The better Silvertone electrics — particularly the Danelectro-built models from the late 1950s and 1960s — share the same Masonite construction, lipstick-tube pickups, and semi-hollow character that makes vintage Danelectros so sought after today. The amp-in-case models are legitimate collectibles. The twin-pickup solidbodies are undervalued players' instruments. And the whole category remains one of the last corners of the vintage market where serious tone is still available at unserous prices.
