Our collection of vintage Gibson electric guitars represents some of the most iconic and historically important instruments ever built. From classic solidbody designs like the Les Paul and SG to legendary semi-hollow and hollowbody models such as the ES-335, ES-175, and ES-330, these guitars define the sound and feel of American electric guitar history.

Every vintage Gibson electric guitar offered here is carefully evaluated for originality, condition, and long-term value. Whether you’re searching for a golden-era Gibson, a Norlin-era classic, or a road-ready vintage player, this collection reflects decades of experience buying and selling Gibson electrics.

Inventory changes frequently, and each guitar is a one-of-a-kind piece of history. If you see the right Gibson here, it’s worth acting quickly.

Buying Guide: What to Know Before You Buy a Vintage Gibson

Golden Era vs. Norlin Era

Gibson's "Golden Era" generally refers to instruments made up to the mid-1960s, before the company was sold to Norlin in 1969. These pre-Norlin guitars — including the original 1950s Les Pauls, ES-335s, and SGs — are typically regarded as the high point for build quality, wood selection, and hand-finishing. Norlin-era Gibsons (1969 through the early 1980s) get mixed reputations depending on the model and year, with some, like early '70s ES-335s and SGs, still holding strong collector value.

What drives value in a vintage Gibson

  • Originality — original finish, hardware, pickups, and case matter a great deal. Refinished tops or replaced PAF pickups can significantly affect a guitar's value, even if the guitar plays beautifully.
  • Top wood and finish — for Les Pauls especially, the figuring and color of the maple top (on Standards and higher-end models) heavily influences price, alongside how the finish has aged (checking, fading, honest wear).
  • Weight and construction era — changes like weight relief, neck volute, or three-piece vs. one-piece mahogany bodies shifted across the decades and matter to collectors targeting a specific era's tone and feel.
  • Documentation — serial numbers, factory order numbers (FON), and pickup/pot date codes help pin down an exact production date, which is why we photograph these details on every listing and show everything so you can see what you're getting.

How we grade and authenticate our guitars

Every Gibson in this collection is inspected in-house before listing. We check serial numbers and factory order numbers against Gibson's known production records, examine pickup and potentiometer date codes, and verify hardware consistency with the guitar's stated year. Each listing includes close-up photos of these details, along with candid shots of any finish wear or repairs, so you can evaluate the guitar's condition and authenticity before buying.

Frequently Asked Questions

How can I tell what year my Les Paul or SG was made?

Check the serial number stamped on the back of the headstock, along with any factory order number (FON) inked or stamped inside the body (visible through the pickup cavities or f-holes on hollowbody models). Gibson's serial number schemes changed several times over the decades and can overlap between years, so cross-referencing pot codes and construction details is often necessary for precise dating. You can use our Dating Your Guitar guide for help, or contact us and we'll lend a hand.

What's the difference between a PAF and a patent-number pickup?

"PAF" (Patent Applied For) refers to Gibson's original humbucker design used from 1957 and seen in some guitars as late as 1963, prized for its slightly inconsistent, hand-wound character. Around 1962, Gibson started to transition to pickups stamped with an actual patent number as the PAF sticker was phased out. Both are highly sought after, though original PAFs typically carry the largest premium.

Do you ship vintage guitars internationally, and how are they insured?

Yes — we ship internationally, and every vintage instrument is insured in transit, packed carefully to protect the instrument from damage during shipping. Import duties and taxes are the buyer's responsibility and vary by destination country.

What's included in a professional setup before shipping?

Every guitar receives a full setup — action, intonation, and truss rod adjustment, and fresh strings — so it's playable straight out of the case, whether it's headed to a stage, studio, or display case.  The string gauge used will be listed in our Spec section, along with action specs.  We cannot nail individual setups - we do the work to make sure you can enjoy the guitar right away, and the process tells us whether the guitar will cooperate when you apply your individual, ideal setup.

Can I trade my current guitar toward one of these?

Yes, we accept trades toward vintage Gibson instruments. Reach out with details and photos of your guitar and we'll provide a trade valuation. You can use our Sell My Vintage Guitar form to make it super easy.
