This 2016 National Solid Rocket is one of a handful of really cool and unique, contemporary guitars we've added to the shop recently. This one is so fun to play - its almost addictive!
National Reso-Phonic Guitars has been building resonator instruments in San Luis Obispo, California since 1988, carrying forward the tradition that John Dopyera started when he launched the first National Tricone in 1927. The modern company produces both faithful reproductions of the original vintage designs and original instruments that extend the resonator concept into new body shapes and materials — the Solid Rocket is one of the latter, a maple-bodied single-cone cutaway that combines the acoustic resonator's projection and cutting character with the tonal warmth and complexity that wood construction contributes over metal.
The maple body produces a different resonator voice than the mahogany-bodied instruments in the National lineup — brighter, with more articulate treble response and a cleaner note separation that players and recording engineers describe as more immediate and present. The single-cone biscuit bridge design delivers the traditional resonator attack — that fast, punchy initial transient that makes these instruments cut through ensemble playing without amplification in ways that conventional acoustic guitars cannot match. The slotted upper bout sound ports are the visual signature of the Bendaway/Solid Rocket design, dispersing the sound toward the player as well as forward. At 5 lbs 15 oz, the maple body keeps the instrument light and comfortable for extended playing.
The Solid Rocket sports a factory pickup at the end of the fretbaord that has a really cool, bluesy voice. This guitar has another electric voice as well... The Hot Plate is the National-endorsed and Mike Dowling-designed amplification solution for these instruments — a complete self-contained pickup system built into a replacement coverplate that requires absolutely no modification to the guitar. The plate houses a Lollar single-coil Tele-style pickup, passive volume and tone controls, and a 1/4" output jack, all accessible without touching the instrument's original hardware. It takes approximately five minutes to install, does not contact the cone, and can be swapped back to the original coverplate whenever the player prefers purely acoustic operation. It is the correct, purpose-built solution for professional resonator amplification. Ebony fingerboard with diamond inlays on a maple neck, 25" scale, 12" radius, 19 frets. Action set at 3/32" on both strings at the twelfth fret. Original hardshell case included.
You can't really tell that anyone has played this guitar. The frets show barely visible wear. It really looks like a new instrument. The Hotplate required zero modifications to the guitar, and there are no other changes, issues, or repairs.
Excerpts from Real Online User Reviews:
- "The HotPlate is self-contained — everything's on the coverplate. No question, National guitars are full-sounding and loud acoustically, but for those who need a pickup there's no cleaner option." — Mike Dowling, mikedowling.com
- "Built into a custom-made replacement coverplate and therefore requiring no modifications to the guitar — the Hot-Plate includes a single-coil Lollar pickup, passive volume and tone controls, and output jack." — Peghead Nation
- "Reso Rockets are absolutely the loudest and most versatile Nationals ever made — the wood body adds warmth and tonal complexity to the resonator voice." — Catfish Keith
- "The Hot Plate doesn't have any effect on the acoustic voice of your instrument — it takes about five minutes to install and is perfectly safe to use on any biscuit bridge National." — Folkway Music
