This 2003 Matchless ESD 2x12" cabinet is in excellent condition with original Matchless Special Design speakers. No repairs, no replacements, no modifications. We also have a head in stock that matches this cabinet - a beautiful HC20 with the same color scheme.

Matchless builds their cabinets to a standard that matches their amplifier heads, and this 2003 ESD 2x12" cabinet reflects that. Loaded with two Matchless Special Design 12" speakers (cone code 53 H1777), this is a purpose-built cabinet voiced for Matchless amplifiers — tight, articulate, and capable of handling the dynamic range these amps are known for. The 4-ohm impedance makes it an appropriate match for a wide range of Matchless heads. Overall condition is excellent throughout.

Matchless relaunched in 1999 after the original company folded in 1999, and by 2003 they had re-established their reputation for high-quality, point-to-point construction and premium components. The ESD (Extended Sound Design) cabinet line used Baltic birch construction and proprietary speaker configurations — not off-the-shelf components. The 11-ply Baltic birch cabinet is stiffer and more acoustically consistent than the particleboard or MDF used in mass-market cabinets, which contributes to tighter low-end response and better transient definition. The red weave grille and black vinyl covering are correct period appointments for this cabinet.

Amplifiers: We take additional precautions to prevent common shipping damage. Depending on the amp, this may include removing tubes, pulling the chassis from the cabinet if heavy transformers present a drop risk, or removing heavy speakers that could crack baffles in transit. Reassembly is required on delivery — we label everything clearly. These measures add to shipping costs but reflect hard-won experience. Vintage amplifiers (20 years or older) are sold as-is — all amps are tested in our shop upon intake and again before shipping. We cover shipping damage but cannot be responsible for the failure of vintage components in instruments that are 20 to 50-plus years old.
