Extensive attempts were made to save this rare, 1924 0-21. It is a playable guitar as it sits, and I wonder what kind of future it might have if someone were to tackle a restoration. The guitar is one of just 135 made in 1924. It might just be worth digging in and getting it as right as possible.
The guitar has been completely refinished. The finish is not era-correct - it is much thicker than the original. It is likely nitro lacquer.
There are numerous crack repairs throughout - top, sides and back. Someone did the work with care, staining the splines used on the back and even re-building a section of the rosette, herringbone and all. This section is on the bridge side of the soundhole, directly under the strings. There is a strip of Brazilian rosewood that was patched on the side - the lower bout near the top of the guitar. There are two sections of Brazilian binding on the back that were patched, a one-inch section on the bass side and a longer one on the treble side.
The bridge is a replacement. The bridge plate, remarkably, is original. The frets have been replaced and the neck has been reset. One short top brace was replaced. The rest of the bracing is original.
The guitar was most likely built for use wiith gut, or classical strings. This guitar has obviously been used with steel strings. We put some 12 gauge bronze strings on it and tuned it up for a bit. It plays surprisingly well, but it isn't advisable to use the guitar like this, so we're going to put some nylon strings on it and have kept it detuned in the interim.
The patent number Kluson tuning machines appear to be original and they're in excellent condition.
The guitar will be sturdily double-boxed for shipment as there is no case included. We do this regularly and will get the guitar to you safely.
