The standard HD-28 is one of Martin's most respected production dreadnoughts — herringbone purfling, scalloped forward-shifted X-bracing, and the complete D-28 tonal foundation. This 2009 example was custom-ordered with a specification that addresses the one area where the standard instrument leaves room on the table: the top. Adirondack spruce is the tonewood Martin used on virtually every guitar it built through the 1940s, before wartime depletion of the Adirondack red spruce forests made it unavailable and forced the industry's shift to Sitka. The difference is real and well-documented — Adirondack tops are stiffer, lighter, and more responsive across the full dynamic range than Sitka, with a characteristic that experienced players describe as greater headroom and projection at louder playing levels and more complex harmonic response at lower ones. On a dreadnought played hard, the Adirondack top opens up in a way that Sitka simply does not. Adi spruce is a significant upcharge as well, and it will add to the value of the guitar in the future.
The custom specification goes further than the top. The pickguard isn't a significant thing usually, but the upgraded guard on this one is a marked improvement over the stock part - check out that liquid-looking tortoise! Diamond and snowflake inlays — the more elaborate inlay pattern that marks this as a step above the standard HD-28 appointments. The Ambertone sunburst finish — Martin's warm amber toner applied in a period-inspired sunburst — gives the guitar a visual character distinct from both the standard satin and gloss naturals, and photographs exceptionally well. The Waverly open-gear tuners are original and correct — a respected premium hardware choice that Martin uses on upper-tier instruments and that offers smooth, precise tuning with excellent stability.
The LR Baggs Lyric microphone system has been installed — non-original but a professional-grade acoustic amplification solution that captures the sound of the guitar's top directly rather than relying on an under-saddle transducer. Action is set at 3/32" on both strings at the twelfth fret. At 4 lbs 14.5 oz this is a resonant, well-balanced dreadnought that plays immediately well. Original hardshell case included.
The guitar shows little use, with very little discernable fret wear and light signs of use here and there. The neck is perfect, so is the action. This is just a killer piece! The case is super nice as well.
