Style 45 Martin guitars are extremely rare from this era.  Last year, we sold the only 000-45 made in 1974 and we're stoked to have this rare 1975 here in the shop!

From the first 000-45 in 1906 through 2005, Martin built exactly 341 of them — a production total that makes them among the rarest catalog acoustic guitars ever made by any American manufacturer. Three were made in 1975, including this example.  Style 45 guitars always get the best woods.  You can tell when you play this one - it sounds amazing.

The 000-45 was discontinued in 1942 due to wartime materials shortages, and there were no pearl-appointed guitars at all in Martin's lineup until 1968, when Martin reintroduced the D-45, followed by the 000-45 in 1970. The 1970s production run represents the reintroduction of the most elaborate guitar Martin makes after nearly three decades of absence from the catalog.  This is the ultimate collectible prize, featuring hand-selected abalone on the top, back, and sides, including a pearl border around the neck joint. The demand for these instruments was never commercial in any conventional sense. Martin built them when someone specifically requested one.

The 45-style fingerboard inlays are what Martin calls the long-pattern snowflake type — and all of the pearl is abalone, which is much more colorful than just white mother-of-pearl. The abalone purfling runs the full perimeter of the top, back, and sides — every edge of this instrument is bordered in abalone — with the vertical block C.F. Martin headstock logo also in abalone. The ebony fingerboard and ebony bridge are correct period specifications. The solid sitka spruce top and Indian rosewood back and sides are in excellent condition throughout, with no cracks and no repairs.

The guitar has been refretted.  The frets are in very good condition and the work is clean. The pickguard is a non-original tortoiseshell replacement. The saddle is non-original synthetic. The nut was removed for the fret job and returned. A strap button has been added at the neck heel. None of these details affect the instrument's structural integrity, playability, or tonal character — they are disclosed fully and are visible in the photos. The finish shows some checking consistent with 50 years of age, expected and natural in a nitrocellulose lacquer instrument of this vintage. Action is set at 4/32" on both strings at the twelfth fret. At 4 lbs 7 oz this is an extraordinarily light instrument. Mahogany neck at .855" at the first fret and .989" at the tenth, 24.9" scale, 1-11/16" nut, 16" radius. Period-correct Martin hardshell case — not the original case, but a correct-era Martin case we had in stock and matched to the guitar.

The saddle shows some height and the action is reasonable, as noted in the spec below.  The guitar will eventually need a neck reset, as all vintage Martin guitars do, but it is good to go as it sits.

We buy, sell, and take trades.
