California is really big, so the 90 mile distance between our shop and Kauer Guitars practically makes us neighbors.  I was a Kauer dealer for a few years there - I actually might still be on the books there I suppose.  Every guitar we ordered was perfect, as Doug requires.  This guitar is no exception, and what a blast it is to play!

Kauer Guitars was founded in 2008 in Sacramento, California — where boutique craftsmanship collides head-on with fearless design and a sense of humor that refuses to stay in the corner. After founding Kauer Guitars, Doug didn't build Banshees for the first couple years — he wanted to stand on the merits of his own designs. But as demand for his reverse-bodied creations increased, he had a change of heart, and the Banshee became the model that put Kauer on the map. Every Kauer is PLEK'd in house, ensuring a level of fret precision and playability consistency that most builders at this price point simply cannot match. The Banshee is Sacramento's answer to the Firebird — built from the same design DNA, executed with the specific material choices and construction refinements that a boutique shop produces when it has the time and attention to get every detail right.

This is a custom baritone configuration — the Banshee platform extended to a 27" scale length, the dimension that drops string tension into the range where lower tunings speak clearly and string-to-string definition remains articulate even with heavy gauge strings. Running .013"-.072", this instrument is set up for serious downtuned work — the 27" scale and the Spanish mahogany through-neck construction provide the sustain, note definition, and tonal body that baritone playing demands. The wenge fingerboard contributes additional clarity and articulation in the upper registers — a naturally bright, dense tropical hardwood that rewards the extended scale length with focused attack and note separation.

The custom metalflake tangelo orange and deep purple flake finish is the kind of paint job that stops the conversation — two distinct metalflake colors applied with the visual depth and shimmer that only metalflake lacquer produces, shifting in different lighting from orange-dominant to purple-dominant depending on the angle. This is not a stock finish. It is a custom order made once, for this guitar.

The Wolfetone KauerBucker humbuckers — a collaboration between Wolfetone's boutique winding operation and Kauer's specific tonal requirements — read 7.34k neck and 8.57k bridge, correctly balanced for the Banshee's Spanish mahogany construction and voiced for the warm, articulate character that mahogany neck-through guitars produce best. TonePros Tune-o-matic bridge and stop bar tailpiece in gold, Kluson banjo-style tuners, mother-of-pearl keystone inlays on the wenge fingerboard. Standard C neck profile at .89" at the first fret and 1.03" at the twelfth, 12" radius, 22 frets, 1.70" nut width. Action set at 2/32" on both strings at the twelfth fret. At 6 lbs 10 oz this is a remarkably light instrument for a baritone. Near mint condition throughout. Mono gig bag included.
