Here we have a Stone Case Co. five-latch archtop case dating to the turn of the decade, 1959–1960, sized and fitted for Gibson's 17-inch body guitars — the ES-350 and Byrdland being the primary candidates. The case is in excellent condition: the exterior covering is intact with honest wear, the hardware latches and hinges are functional, there are no slipts or separations of the top and sides, and the interior retains its shape and finish. The handle is a replacement that utilized the two original handle mounts.
Stone Case Co. supplied Gibson with cases throughout the 1950s and into the early 1960s, and these five-latch examples are the correct period cases for the ES-350T and Byrdland — two of Gibson's most significant thinline archtops. The Byrdland in particular, introduced in 1955 as a collaboration with Billy Byrd and Hank Garland, was Gibson's premier short-scale thinline archtop and carried a substantial list price. A correct, original case for either of these instruments is increasingly difficult to find in this kind of condition. For collectors pursuing a complete, period-correct presentation, the case matters as much as the guitar.
