Guitars bring us joy here at Mahar's Vintage Guitars, especially all-original, rare, killer pieces like this 1965 Gibson SG Junior.  A local seller brought the SG to us.  He said it belonged to his grandmother, who played in a 1960s all-female country band here in Northern California.

Five hundred and nineteen Gibson SG Juniors were made in 1965. Polaris White was a custom color option offered in Gibson's price list only from 1962 through 1968 — significantly rarer than Cherry, the standard finish, and commanding a meaningful premium among collectors who know these instruments. The Maestro Vibrola tailpiece was seemingly never offered in Gibson's catalogs as a standard option — Vibrola-equipped SG Juniors were factory-equipped with the tailpiece but the option simply did not appear in the price lists, making them rarer still within an already small production run. A Polaris White SG Junior with original Maestro Vibrola, original dog-ear P-90, original Brazilian rosewood fingerboard, and original case in excellent condition is a specific and documented rarity — the combination of color, tailpiece, and originality that collectors specifically seek.

This guitar was built before Gibson changed the nut width from 1 11/16" to 1 9/16".

The guitar is in amazing condition with no breaks, repairs, or issues.  It plays perfectly and it set up without a fight.  The truss rod has room for future neck relief adjustments.  The original frets show light pitting and are nowhere near needing work.

In 1961, the Gibson Les Paul Junior model morphed into the SG body shape — a sharp double-cutaway design that was a drastic departure from the original Les Paul. The all-mahogany SG Junior sported a single bridge-position P-90 pickup and an unbound rosewood fretboard with dot inlays. The SG Junior was Gibson's most straightforward electric guitar: one pickup, one volume, one tone, wraparound bridge or Maestro Vibrola, nothing else. It is the instrument that strips the signal chain to its minimum and lets the P-90 and the mahogany do the work. The all-mahogany construction provides natural compression and sustain, and the lightweight body feels lively and resonant acoustically — plugged in, the P-90 goes from a roar to a whisper with a turn of the volume control.

The dog-ear P-90 reads 13.45k — notably higher than the typical 8-9k range for a stock P-90.  We took a close look at the pickup - it is definitely original and untouched. The covers, screws, cavity, wiring, and solder joints are all original and intact. The Double Line Kluson Deluxe tuners are original — the D and G tuner shafts have a slight bend that does not affect tuning function, nvisible in the photos.

Brazilian rosewood fingerboard with mother-of-pearl dot inlays, 22 original frets in excellent condition, slim-medium C mahogany neck at .783" at the first fret and .982" at the twelfth. Original compensated wraparound bridge, original Maestro Vibrola with original arm. Original black pickguard. Original pots, wiring, and output jack. Action set at 2/32" on both strings at the twelfth fret. At 6 lbs 9 oz this is a light, resonant, lively instrument. Original hardshell case in very good condition.
