This 1974 Fender Telecaster Custom is a quintessential example of Fender’s early-’70s evolution, blending classic Telecaster simplicity with the added power and versatility of a wide-range humbucker in the neck position. Instantly recognizable with its large pickguard and dual-control layout, the Telecaster Custom offers unique tones that makes it a favorite among players who want both twang and warmth in one vintage instrument.
This example has seen some playing time that gives it some serious mojo. The frets appear to be original, and despite all the wear they're still pretty full. They have been milled and crowned. The fretboard shows classic 70s Fender finish flaking. If it were my guitar, I would remove the rest of the fretboard finish. That said, the current condition isn't an issue when playing the guitar.
The neck is straight and the truss rod has room for future neck relief adjustment. The guitar set up nicely for us with no struggles. The action is just about perfect with a set of 10-46 strings.
All of the parts are original with the exception of the one volume pot. There was an oddball Alpha pot in this position when it came in, which was a 250K pot. I put a 1972 250k pot in its place because it was sounding really good with this config. The rest of the parts are original.
The case is a nice, recent Fender hardshell that looks like an early 70s case at first glance.
As with all instruments at Mahar’s Vintage Guitars, it has been fully inspected, photographed accurately, and professionally evaluated to ensure it plays its absolute best.
