Here we have a truly unique, one of a kind guitar that was painted by celebrated hot rod master, Gene Winfield.  

Gene Winfield opened his custom hot rod shop in 1955 — the same year the Stratocaster went into full production. Over the following seven decades he built or painted some of the most celebrated custom vehicles in American history, including film and television cars for Blade Runner, Star Trek, The Man from U.N.C.L.E., and Get Smart, and show cars that won top honors at the Detroit Autorama, the Grand National Roadster Show, and events across the United States and internationally. His signature technique — the multi-stage fadeaway paint job, blending and transitioning colors across body panels in a way that no two applications ever produce identically — became the most imitated and least replicable finish in the custom car world. Gene Winfield passed away on March 4, 2025. He was 97 years old.

This guitar is one of a kind. A raw, unfinished Fender Stratocaster body — donated by Fender Custom Shop — was taken to Gene Winfield's shop, where he painted it by hand to replicate the exact fadeaway color scheme of his celebrated Wild Cad, the 1959 Cadillac custom that had taken top honors at the Sacramento Autorama and other major automotive events. The purple sparkle fadeaway finish on this guitar body was applied using the same technique that Winfield had deployed across six decades of award-winning custom work. After Winfield completed the paint, artist Mike Clines pinstriped the body in 12k white gold with green accents to match the aesthetic of the Wild Cad itself. The completed guitar was donated as a charity raffle prize for the Make-A-Wish Foundation of Sacramento and Northeastern California through the Vintage Fridays cruise night — a community event for pre-1973 American vehicles where the guitar was raffled to benefit children's wishes.

The guitar underneath the paint is a 2010 Fender MIM Stratocaster — alder body, modern C maple neck at .843" at the first fret and .891" at the tenth, maple fingerboard with black dot inlays at 9.5" radius, 21 frets, vintage-style synchronized tremolo with original arm, Fender standard ceramic single-coil pickups reading 6.70k neck, 6.79k middle, and 6.78k bridge — a well-matched, correctly functional set. All hardware original. One pickguard screw is non-original, noted honestly. Original hang tags and manual included. Non-original Freedom hardshell case in excellent condition. At 7 lbs 14.5 oz this is a comfortable, playable instrument. Action set at 2/32" on both strings at the twelfth fret.

What you are acquiring is not a production guitar. It is a documented piece of American custom car and pop culture history — a canvas painted by a master of his craft in the last decade of his life, for a cause he chose to support, in the colors of one of his most celebrated creations. There will never be another one.
