Fender 1969 Mustang Competition Burgundy w/Rare Lefty Case Excellent

This Fender Competition Mustang in Burgundy is the same year and color as Kirk Cobain's own Mustang, and it includes a rare lefty case.  The guitar is all original, shows some cool character in the yellowed clear-coat. 

The Fender Mustang's 24" short scale and dual grey-bottom single-coil pickups produce a bright, snappy character with a softer attack than a full-scale Fender — nimble in the upper register and light under the fingers. The Competition Burgundy finish is original and in very good shape, and the guitar weighs in at a trim 6 lbs 15.5 oz. Both grey-bottom pickups read nearly identical at 5.56k and 5.54k, and all electronics — pots, wiring, solder joints, switches, and jack — are original. The dual 3-way slider switches give the Mustang its phase-switching flexibility that no other production guitar of the era offered. This example presents well overall.

The Mustang was introduced by Fender in 1964 as a student-market instrument, but the Competition series — launched in 1969 — elevated it with a racing stripe and sport-color finishes borrowed from the automotive world. Competition Burgundy is one of the more sought-after colors in the lineup. The grey-bottom single-coil pickups are the correct and desirable version for this era. The neck date code reads 16 131 9 8B, and the potentiometers carry manufacturer code 137 (CTS) with date code 6642, consistent with the Competition-era production window. The alder body, maple neck, and rosewood fretboard are all original and unrepaired. Fender 'F' tuners are present, original, and in excellent condition.

The fretboard shows a small divot between the 3rd and 4th fret at the top of the neck — no repair, just a cosmetic blemish. The tremolo arm is not original. The case included is a Victoria Luggage Co. left-handed case — not the original Fender case, but notably a period-style hard case made for a lefty Mustang, which is unusual. Case condition is good - there is one replaced latch and one of the original latches is broken.  The handle and hinges are intact. No accessories or documentation are included.
