65amps was founded in 2002 by Dan Boul and Peter Stroud.  Stroud needed a low-powered amplifier robust enough for his touring gig with Sheryl Crow that still sounded as full and rich as a larger tube amp, and he and Boul developed the answer in Boul's garage. Much of the London's circuit design reflects its inspiration: the mid-1960s 18-watt Marshall Model 1958.  There is a difference here however in that each channel has a distinct voice thanks primarily to its preamp tube.  The Normal channel employs an EF86, while the Tremolo channel uses a 12AX7. Boul started with an 18-watt Marshall and a vintage Vox AC15 as his inspirations, and through extensive experimentation evolved the circuit to be more tonally versatile than either source.

The Color Channel is EF86 pentode-based with a tone knob and 6-way color switch that adjusts the mid focus — reminiscent of classic British Invasion sound until you push it hard via the Booster switch, at which point it flips into the ultra-rich, harmonic saturation that defines modern boutique amplifier design. The Tremolo channel features 65amps' own bias tremolo — what they jokingly call "aftertrem" — which actuates after you hit your notes and trems the decay rather than the attack, preserving pick dynamics in a way that conventional tremolo circuits can't. The amp features point-to-point hand wiring, was 100% hand-assembled in the USA, with each amp custom voiced and broken in thoroughly before sale.

The Celestion G12 Alnico Blue speaker in the matching cabinet is one of the house speakers 65amps builds around — paired with their custom hand-wound transformers, it delivers lots of punch and throaty detail. Original speaker cone, original Mercury Magnetics transformers, original filter caps — all intact on this 18-watt EL84-powered head. Tube complement: two 6BQ5/EL84 power tubes, EHX 6CA4 rectifier, 12AX7 and two EF86 preamp tubes. Original pots, knobs, handle, tolex, and grille throughout, all in excellent condition. Black and cream covering with the art deco-inspired vent grille that gives 65amps cabinets their distinctive retro presentation. Extension speaker output included. No speaker cable included — note this if you need one to connect head to cabinet. No footswitch, no cover.

Everything works perfectly and we tested all the tubes to make sure you're good to go when you receive the amp.

Shipping Policy
By completing your purchase you are agreeing to this shipping policy. Shipments require signature on delivery, no exceptions. Less than 1% of our shipments are damaged in transit, and we are committed to making sure your item arrives safely. If there is damage, retain all packing materials intact, photograph them immediately, and send the photos to sales@maharsvintageguitars.com.

Amplifiers: We take additional precautions to prevent common shipping damage. Depending on the amp, this may include removing tubes, pulling the chassis from the cabinet if heavy transformers present a drop risk, or removing heavy speakers that could crack baffles in transit. Reassembly is required on delivery — we label everything clearly. These measures add to shipping costs but reflect hard-won experience. Vintage amplifiers (20 years or older) are sold as-is — all amps are tested in our shop upon intake and again before shipping. We cover shipping damage but cannot be responsible for the failure of vintage components in instruments that are 20 to 50-plus years old.
