These Olympics are light, comfortable, super resonant and really fun to play. This example has great curb appeal - the finish is still a brilliant cherry and overall cosmetic condition is excellent.
The neck thickness is typical of Gibson's mid-60s guitars - pretty darn thin. The measurements are below, and pictured is a Stew Mac neck shaping tool we use to try to illustrate the shape of the back of the neck.
We thoroughly check all our guitars out on the way into our inventory. The truss rod is verified as effective for future neck adjustments. The pickups, pots, switch and output jack are all original. Pots date to early 1965. All solder joints are untouched.
The pickguard is original and is void of cracks and issues that are common with this model. Tuners are original "double line" Klusons. The original nickel "lightning bolt", compensated wrap-around bridge is in place.
There are no issues or repairs at the headstock. When I first received this guitar I could see that the neck heel had been stressed at some point, but it did not break. This is a common issue with the Olympic. A look under the pickguard showed that the neck tenon was fully intact, but there was a slight lack of stability that needed to be addressed.
The guitar went off to my luthier, South Sound Guitar Repairs in Tacoma, Washington. Jeff assessed the guitar and recommended some reinforcement with a piece of carbon fiber material at the end of the fretboard. The guitar plays great and stays in tune nicely, which was a bit of a challenge at the outset.
The frets are in very good condition. The guitar has been played, but far less than most I've seen. Action is low and the guitar plays great. Tones lean more towards Fender than Gibson, thanks to the original single coil pickups.
