This 2021 Gibson Custom Shop 1958 Les Paul Standard Reissue VOS in sunburst is in mint/like-new condition - if it had ever been out of the case before getting here, we couldn't tell.  The guitar plays exactly as you'd expect from a well-set-up Custom Shop historic: low, even action at 2/32" on both the first and sixth strings at the 12th fret, no buzzing, and a beefy neck profile.

At 8 lbs 6.5 oz, it sits on the lighter end of the typical Les Paul range.

The combination of a lightweight one-piece mahogany back and two-piece plain maple top in a 24.75" scale body produces the tonal hallmarks of this platform — warm, singing midrange from the mahogany, upper-harmonic complexity from the maple cap, and a response that rewards both clean playing and pushed amp tones. 

The 1958 Les Paul Standard occupies a specific and important place in Gibson history. By 1958, Gibson had settled into the body contour, neck profile, and pickup configuration that would define the "Burst" era. The '58 reissue captures the transition-year character: slightly rounder neck profile than the slimmer '60 spec, paired with PAF-voiced humbuckers and the no-wire ABR-1 bridge that was standard on originals. Gibson's Custom Shop historic reissue program — which has been refining these instruments since the 1990s — represents the most thorough attempt to replicate the construction methods, materials, and tooling of the original run. The VOS (Vintage Original Spec) finish treatment replicates the aged-but-not-artificially-distressed look of a well-preserved original.

The neck is mahogany with a fat, 1950s profile measuring .903" at the first fret and 1.06" at the twelfth — substantial but not clubby. The fretboard is rosewood with mother-of-pearl trapezoid inlays and a 12" radius across 22 frets. The nut is nylon at 1-11/16" width. Hardware includes Kluson Deluxe tuners, a no-wire ABR-1 bridge with metal saddles at 1.973" string spacing, and a chrome stop bar tailpiece. Pickups are Gibson-branded PAF-style humbuckers reading 7.94k at the neck and 7.86k at the bridge — well-matched and within the range of original PAF output. Wiring, pots, output jack plate, switch (Switchcraft 3-way toggle), and all hardware are original. Knobs are amber speed knobs, pickguard is cream, and the switch tip is white.

Two cosmetic items to note: the chrome stop bar tailpiece has cloudiness that could not be polished out, and both pickup covers show similar cloudiness (neck) and light scratches (bridge) that also could not be polished out. These are surface-level finish characteristics consistent with the VOS treatment and normal for chrome hardware on a used instrument — they do not affect function. Action is 2/32" on both the first and sixth strings at the 12th fret with 9-46 hybrid strings. The original Gibson hardshell case is included in excellent condition, along with the Certificate of Authenticity and hang tags. No other accessories are included. No odors.
