Buying Guide: How to Choose a Vintage or Used Electric Guitar

Start with what matters most to you

Vintage and used electric guitars generally appeal to buyers for one of two reasons: collector value or player value, and the right guitar depends on which matters more to you. A collector-focused buyer typically prioritizes originality, rarity, and documented history, even with some possibly playability quirks. A player-focused buyer often benefits more from a guitar prioritizing comfort, tone, and reliability, even if it's not the rarest example of its model. Most buyers land somewhere between the two, and it's worth being honest with yourself about which end of that spectrum matters more before you shop.

What to check on any vintage or used electric guitar

  • Originality — original hardware, pickups, finish, and case generally support both value and a more authentic vintage experience, though a well-done modification isn't automatically a dealbreaker for a player-focused buyer.
  • Structural condition — check for neck angle issues, fret wear, and (on hollow or semi-hollow bodies) any seam separation or bracing concerns, since these affect both playability and long-term value.
  • Documentation — serial numbers, date codes, and any paperwork help confirm a guitar's age and authenticity; each brand has its own dating quirks, which is why our Dating Your Guitar guide covers multiple manufacturers.
  • Setup and playability — a guitar that looks perfect in photos can still need real setup work; every instrument we sell is professionally set up before it ships, regardless of age.

Explore by brand

Each brand has its own history, era distinctions, and things worth knowing before you buy. For deeper guidance specific to a brand, visit our Fender, Gibson, Gretsch, or Epiphone collection pages, each of which includes a dedicated buying guide and FAQ for that brand.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I know if a vintage guitar is a good investment versus just a good player's instrument?

Investment-grade vintage guitars are typically all-original, well-documented, and from a desirable production era for that specific model — think pre-CBS Fenders, pre-Norlin Gibsons, or pre-war Martins. If a guitar has been refinished, has replaced electronics, or is from a less collectible production run, it may still be an excellent instrument to play, just less likely to appreciate the way a pristine original example would.

Do you offer financing or layaway on higher-value instruments?

Reach out directly to discuss options for higher-value pieces — availability can depend on the specific instrument and current arrangements, so it's best to ask us directly rather than assume a standard policy applies.

Do you ship guitars internationally, and how are they insured?

Yes — we ship internationally, and every instrument is insured in transit, packed carefully to protect it from damage during shipping. Import duties and taxes are the buyer's responsibility and vary by destination country.

What's included in a professional setup before shipping?

Every guitar receives a full setup — action, intonation, and truss rod adjustment, and fresh strings — so it's playable straight out of the case, whether it's headed to a stage, studio, or living room.  We list the string gauge used and the action specs.  We do a setup that most players will enjoy, and the process tells us if the guitar will cooperate if you want it set up differently.  We are not in a position to nail your setup perfectly if you're outside the area.

Can I trade my current guitar toward a purchase?

Yes, we accept trades toward any instrument in our inventory. Reach out with details and photos of your guitar and we'll provide a trade valuation. You can use our Sell My Vintage Guitar form to make it super easy.
