The Electra Model 871 is an envelope filter — a band-pass filter pedal that produces the classic auto-wah, funk-inflected sweep characteristic of the Doctor Q circuit it is derived from. Envelope filters of this type respond to pick attack, compressing and sweeping the filter cutoff in real time. The result is a wet, vocal, quack-heavy filter effect that sits well under rhythm playing and works equally on bass or guitar. This is an analog circuit with the immediate, organic response that defines the format.
The Electra 870 series was produced by Electro-Harmonix for St. Louis Music Supply Co. in the mid-1970s, effectively rebadging EHX designs under the Electra name for distribution through that retail channel. The Model 871 corresponds to the Doctor Q envelope follower circuit. These were sold in modest numbers and never achieved the wide distribution of the standard EHX line, which makes them genuinely scarce today. For collectors, they represent a specific and documented chapter in the OEM history of early Electro-Harmonix production.
