The 1972 Martin D-41 is a true vintage gem, representing the craftsmanship and tonal excellence that has made Martin a cornerstone of American acoustic guitar history.
The guitar has already had a neck reset, sparing you the great expense and hassle. A professional refret was also performed and a new bone nut and saddle applied.
Pretty much all vintage Martin guitars need this work. I've personally bought some Martin guitars on Reverb over the last year from private sellers. The common line is: "This guitar plays perfectly and doesn't really need any work right now". My experience is that 75% of the private seller Martin guitars from on Reverb from this period DO need work, but they're selling for full retail. The work done on this guitar might cost you up to $1500 or more, and it could take months of waiting to get it back from a good luthier. Buying one that has a slightly lower up-front cost might just push you over the edge, or you can buy this one!
The guitar shows enough wear to have vintage character, but it isn't thrashed. There is checking and strum wear through the finish, dings here and there, but there are no cracks, the bridge and pickguard are original, and it is 100% ready to go. There is an added strap button to the neck heel.
Built in Nazareth, PA, this dreadnought features East Indian rosewood back and sides, a solid Sitka spruce top, and abalone pearl inlays, giving it the elegant appointments of the flagship D-45 with a slightly more understated style.
This instrument offers the balanced projection, warm low end, and sparkling high register that players associate with vintage Martin acoustics. With over 50 years of natural aging, the resonance and tonal complexity are unmatched by modern equivalents. The guitar comes complete with its original blue molded case, adding authenticity and collector’s appeal.
Whether you’re a performer seeking a stage-ready vintage Martin or a collector searching for a well-preserved D-41 from the golden era, this 1972 example is a rare find.
At Mahar’s Vintage Guitars, every guitar is professionally inspected, set up, and photographed in detail, ensuring accuracy and buyer confidence.
