Say hello to the best sounding Strat in the shop, at least for now.
This 1961 Strat has a body-only refin in Dakota red. I've seen better refin attempts, but the rest of the guitar makes up for it - not that it is terrible, it just isn't really all that accurate. Thankfully, no apparent sanding was done to change the body contours when the guitar was stripped.
The neck's finish is original, as is the two-patent-number headstock logo. The pencil-written neck date is 6-61. The single-line Kluson tuners are original and no other set has been installed so there are no mystery screw holes hidden behind the tuning machines. We even show you this in our extensive set of pictures.
As a '61, you see that it has the original, 11-screw "green guard", and the body cavity has the "shoulder" in the control cavity to grab the screw Fender added there in 1959. The back plate is original as well.
The original black-bottom pickups sound sooo goooood! The original pots date to the 23rd week of 1961. The tone capacitor is original - in 1961 the previously-standard white "chicklet" paper tone capacitor changes to a red round disc capacitor with yellow insulting tubing on one leg of the cap.
The original 3-way switch is in the case - installed currently is a 5-way. The rest of the solders are original with just the leads to the output jack having been unsoldered for the refinish work.
The bridge, trem arm, tremolo claw - all of that, and all the plastic is original.
The frets have been replaced - professionally re-fretted with Sanko 6100. The previous owner took care to retain the original frets, which are in the case.
The original case must have had a major lining issue. The interior fuzz is now blue! The rest of the case is in nice shape and is original to the guitar.
The guitar plays fablulously and has that neck shape that beefed up slightly over the skinnier 1959 into 1960 neck. The back of the neck feels sublime. The larger frets give you an incredible feel, with the ability to dig in nicely.
This is just a fabulous, Pre CBS Strat. You'll love it, and you'll be able to take it out and play it as opposed to some museum piece that would be too freaky to play.
