The Celestion G12M 25-watt with the 55Hz cone and the black magnet cover — the Black Back — is one of the defining speakers of British hard rock and heavy metal from the late 1960s through the late 1970s. Not the 75Hz Greenback that Marshall used in their lead guitar cabinets, but the 55Hz bass cone variant: wider resonance point, more low-end weight and body, the same compressed warm midrange character, and the specific tonal signature that shows up on the bass and rhythm guitar tracks of some of the most important British rock records ever made. Marshall loaded these into their 1935 bass cabinets from around 1967 through the very late 1970s. They are genuinely rare to find outside of Marshall — making this Mitchell GB412 cabinet loaded with four matched original examples a specific and significant piece of gear.

The 444 Muller cone stampings on all four speakers are intact and confirmed — the specific cone identification that verifies these are the correct 55Hz Black Back units rather than the more common 75Hz Greenbacks. All four speakers are original to the cabinet, all matching, all in excellent condition with original cones. A fully intact matched 4x12 with original Black Backs is increasingly difficult to find as these speakers are routinely pulled from period cabinets and sold individually at significant prices — a cabinet with four originals intact is the find that boutique speaker hunters specifically look for.

The Mitchell GB412 cabinet itself is in excellent original condition throughout — original black tolex, original black weave grille cloth in very good condition, original plywood construction, original plastic handle. At 92 lbs this is a properly weighted vintage British 4x12. Casters included.

Amplifiers: We take additional precautions to prevent common shipping damage. Depending on the amp, this may include removing tubes, pulling the chassis from the cabinet if heavy transformers present a drop risk, or removing heavy speakers that could crack baffles in transit. Reassembly is required on delivery — we label everything clearly. These measures add to shipping costs but reflect hard-won experience. All amps are tested in our shop upon intake and again before shipping. We cover shipping damage but cannot be responsible for the failure of vintage components in instruments that are 20 to 50-plus years old.
