This 1958 Fender Stratocaster, refinished in a stunning Burgundy Mist, is a rare vintage guitar that captures the magic of Fender’s golden era.
While the refinish makes this example more accessible than a completely original piece, it still retains the iconic ’58 Strat tone and feel.
This guitar belongs to our good friend, Tim Bluhm of the long-standing Northern California favorite, The Mother Hips. The guitar was used extensively on stage and on the band's records: When We Disappear (2023) and Glowing Lantern (2021).
I appraised the guitar for Tim about a year ago, at which time I went through it completely to verify its authenticity. Here is the text from that appraisal:
The guitar retains most of its original parts and is in excellent condition, with a neck and body refinish. It exhibits the features typical for a Stratocaster from the period:
· Small peghead with “Spaghetti” Fender logo
· One-piece maple neck with “D” neck shape
· Black dot fingerboard inlays
· Black-bottom pickups
Original parts, condition elements and accessories that are often missing from other examples:
· Nearly every screw on the guitar is original except for perhaps the two jack cup screws.
· Tremolo bridge is original, as are the mounting screws, intonation screws, tremolo claw, tremolo claw screws. Two intonation strings appear to perhaps be replacements. Two saddle height screws appear to be changed. The tremolo springs are likely to be replacements.
· Potentiometers, 3-way CRL switch, tone capacitor with most solders appearing to be original
· Neck date: 5-58
· Body date: 6-58
· Pickguard: Single ply, white with original shield plate
· Backplate
· Kluson Deluxe “Single-line” tuning machines
· Pickups with original wiring and height adjustment screws
· 3-spoke knobs
· Strap buttons
Changes from original:
- Non-original, black Fender hardshell case, likely from the 60s
- Body and neck refinish. One nail hole, put in the body during the original finishing process, can be seen near the bridge, under the pickguard. The others are likely hidden behind the refinish. The body does not appear to have been sanded or otherwise had dimensions or contours changed in the refinishing process. Remnants of the original sunburst finish can be seen in the neck pocket. Body date was taped off prior to refinish. Neck date was taped over prior to refinishing and the shape of the neck does not appear to have been altered during the refinish process.
- Output jack cup is original, however the output jack appears to be a replacement, and the wiring from the controls to the jack also appear to be newer than other wiring in the guitar.
- All solders appear to be original with perhaps the exception of the tremolo claw ground wire.
- Frets appear to have been professionally replaced.
The guitar is set up with 10-46 strings and plays perfectly. There is room in the truss rod for future neck relief adjustments.
