The Gibson ETG-150 Electric Tenor Guitar (1948) is an exceptionally rare piece of Gibson history.
Only 19 examples were produced in 1948, making this one of the scarcest post-war electric tenor guitars ever built. Based on Gibson’s popular ES-150 design, the ETG-150 was crafted with a carved spruce top, maple back and sides, and a comfortable tenor-scale neck, offering players the same rich tonal character of Gibson’s hollowbody electrics in a unique four-string tenor format.
This example is in beautiful shape! The frets show very light wear, and look at how clean that Brazilian fretboard is! There is one area on the lower bout where your arm rests while playing that took a moderate hit, and there is an associated crack in the side.
The pickup was rewound in 2019 when the instrument was evaluated by another Northern California shop. They sent it to our favorite rewinder - Tom Brantley. He has always done fantastic, period correct work for us. The tuner buttons were replaced as well. The rest of the guitar is original and it comes in a modern Gretsch hard case. There is an old cable in the case. Is it original to the guitar? Who knows, but it is staying with its long time companion.
Equipped with Gibson’s legendary P-90 pickup, the ETG-150 delivers warm jazz voicings, articulate chord work, and expressive single-note clarity that set it apart from standard tenor acoustics of the era. Its sunburst finish and classic archtop construction highlight Gibson’s craftsmanship during a golden period of innovation.
This example includes its hard case, and like all instruments at Mahar’s Vintage Guitars, it has been professionally inspected, set up, and documented with detailed photography to ensure both authenticity and playability. For players, collectors, or historians, the 1948 Gibson ETG-150 represents an opportunity to own one of the rarest electric tenor guitars ever produced.
