This 1997 Way Huge Purple Platypus Octidrive is a highly collectible early production pedal from Jeorge Tripps’ original Way Huge era—long before Dunlop reissues existed. The Purple Platypus blends a gritty, harmonically rich overdrive with a vintage-style octave-up circuit, producing snarling, psychedelic textures reminiscent of late-’60s octave fuzz tones but with far better clarity and dynamic response.

This example is really clean with just a few marks on the bottom.  We tested it and it kills!

This original ’97 unit delivers the unmistakable Way Huge character: bold midrange, articulate clipping, and a musical octave that blooms more prominently as you play up the neck or roll back your tone control. Whether used for Hendrix-inspired leads, garage-rock riffing, or experimental studio textures, the Purple Platypus remains one of the most unique and expressive pedals of the 1990s boutique boom. Collectors value these early hand-built versions for their tone, rarity, and historical significance.

Players often praise the Purple Platypus: “One of the most fun octave drives ever made” (The Gear Page), “Cuts through without the harsh fizz” (Reddit r/Guitar), “OG Way Huge pedals are special” (Harmony Central), “Perfect for psychedelic and alternative tones” (Ultimate Guitar), and “Inspiring, musical, and wild in the best way” (MyLesPaul Forum).

The octave-drive lineage is tied to players like Jimi Hendrix, Jack White, Doyle Bramhall II, and Josh Homme, who built careers on gritty, octave-laced overdrive tones.
