Buying Guide: How to Choose a Vintage or Used Guitar Amplifier

Start with how you'll actually use it

Choosing the right amp depends heavily on where you'll play it. A vintage low-wattage combo (like a Fender Champ or Princeton) can sound glorious in a small studio or living room but may not have the headroom for a loud stage. A higher-wattage head and cabinet setup, or a boutique amp built for gigging, may serve a working musician better even if it's less collectible than an all-original vintage piece. Be honest about your actual use case before prioritizing rarity or originality.

What to check on any vintage or used amp

  • Tubes and biasing — tubes are a wear item and get replaced periodically regardless of an amp's age; ask whether tubes are original or recently replaced, and whether the amp has been biased for its current tube set.  We test all tubes before listing an amp, and set the bias if necessary.
  • Transformers and capacitors — these are the components most likely to need attention on a genuinely vintage amp; original transformers support collector value, while aging filter capacitors can affect reliability and are worth having checked by a qualified tech if you plan to gig the amp hard.
  • Cabinet and speaker condition — speaker cone condition, cabinet joints, and tolex/covering wear all affect both tone and value; a reputable speaker reissue or replacement isn't necessarily a dealbreaker if disclosed.
  • Documentation — serial numbers, chassis codes, and tube charts help confirm an amp's exact production era; each brand has its own dating conventions.

How we grade and test our amplifiers

Every amp in this collection is inspected and powered on before listing. We note tube condition after testing them, note any non-original components and cosmetic wear clearly in each listing You'll notice our extensive photographs from the chassis to key components so you know exactly what you're buying.  We clean pots and tube sockets on every amp prior to listing.

Explore by brand

Each amp brand has its own circuit history and quirks worth knowing before you buy. For deeper guidance specific to a brand, visit our Fender, Marshall, Vox, or Mesa Boogie amplifier collections, each of which includes a dedicated buying guide and FAQ for that brand.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I know if an amp needs servicing before I play it hard?

If an amp hasn't been played or serviced in years, it's worth having a qualified amp tech check it over before running it at full volume for extended periods, especially for genuinely vintage pieces. Filter capacitors and other components can degrade with age even in an amp that otherwise looks pristine. We note the service history we're aware of in each listing, but we still recommend a check-up if you plan to gig an older amp regularly.

What's the difference between a combo amp and a head-and-cabinet setup?

A combo houses the amplifier chassis and speaker(s) in one cabinet, making it more portable and self-contained. A head-and-cabinet setup separates the amplifier electronics (the head) from the speaker cabinet, giving you more flexibility to mix and match cabinets or upgrade one component without replacing the whole rig. Combos are generally easier to transport, while separate heads and cabs are common in higher-wattage or stage-focused setups.

Do you ship amplifiers, and how are they packed?

Yes — we ship amplifiers nationwide and internationally, with careful attention to packing given the weight and fragility of tubes and transformers in transit. Every amp is insured during shipping. Import duties and taxes for international orders are the buyer's responsibility and vary by destination country.

Do you test amplifiers before shipping?

Yes — every amplifier is powered on and tested for proper function before we list it, and again before it ships.  Any issues found are disclosed in the listing rather than discovered after delivery.

Can I trade my current amp toward a purchase?

Yes, we accept trades toward any amplifier in our inventory, including full collections. Reach out with details and photos of your amp and we'll provide a trade valuation. You can use our Sell Your Vintage Guitar form to make it super easy.
