This fine guitar came to me in a trade during the recent Nashville guitar show.
I can't remember exactly how the conversation went, but the previous owner said something like this: "I have a guitar to trade that you've probably never heard of but I think you're going to like it". He was right on both accounts!
There is no way to know everything in this business, but it does pay to have an open mind. At a distance, I would probably have passed on this guitar. In person, I could tell right away that it was a good one.
David Webber has built guitars in his one-man shop in Vancouver, Canada for years. I understand that he is in the process of or actually has retired, and over the years he built somewhere near a couple thousand pieces. I thought this guitar was a fairly recent build, judging by the overall condition, but it turns out to be a 1997.
This body style is one that he repeated over the years, reminiscent of slope-shoulder dreadnoughts, but with the rounded lower bout. Larrivee makes a similar shaped guitar, and it has similar characteristics to this one, including the great tone you get from the shape, a really fantastic balanced sound with a wider range than a 000 or OM but lacking the loading of bass that you get with a dread.
The guitar plays effortlessly with perfect action. Condition overall is near mint. There are no cracks, repairs or issues. Webber's fit and finish is pretty much flawless. This guitar has the look, feel and craftsmanship that would command at least twice the price from a builder with a household name. That said, there is a Webber following out there that you can join should you make the wise choice to acquire this guitar!
