This 1960s JBL D140F 15-inch speaker with its original cone is a prime example of one of the most iconic bass and guitar speakers ever produced.
Designed by JBL under contract with Fender, the D140F became a standard in Showman and Bassman amps, prized for its massive low-end clarity, tight response, and ability to handle higher wattage than most speakers of its era. With its aluminum dust cap, ribbed cone, and powerful alnico magnet, it delivers articulate bass, sparkling highs, and rich harmonics—ideal for bass, pedal steel, guitar, and hi-fi applications.
This example retains its original cone, a highly desirable feature for collectors and tone purists. The frame shows honest cosmetic wear from age, but the cone is intact with no rubbing or voice coil issues. Speakers like this are increasingly hard to find in unaltered condition.
The D140F was used by artists like Jerry Garcia, Dick Dale, and countless surf, country, and pedal steel players in the '60s and '70s. As part of JBL’s Fender-designed “F Series,” it became known for its unmatched clarity and durability. It later paved the way for models like the K140 and E140.
