This custom James Patterson acoustic sounds huge and is visually gorgeous as well. James clearly had an eye for detail, and he literally wrote the book on guitar inlay, which is still available through Stewart MacDonald and other sources.
When this guitar was traded in I could tell it had a ton of potential, but it did need some work. We sent it off for a neck reset, bridge re-glue, and a new saddle. It came back playing incredibly well and sounding even better than it did when I first checked it out. The scalloped bracing and quality woods are what makes this the killer sounding guitar that it is.
The frets are in excellent shape so they were not replaced in this process. The guitar is now issue-free and ready to serve for decades.
No other repairs or issues are present. Hardshell case included.
Stew Mac's listing information for the Patterson book:
"Pearl Inlay" By James E. Patterson
Instructions for grinding, sawing, routing and gluing abalone and mother-of-pearl, and much more.
The bible of pearl work! The inspiration for generations of inlay artists. Reprinted from the original edition, it includes instructions for grinding, sawing, routing and gluing abalone and mother-of-pearl; making jigs for cutting dots, diamonds and strips; abalone purfling techniques, and tips on pearl engraving.
From James' obituary in 2014:
He quit quit high school and joined the Marines at the end of World War II. He spent a few years in China and was a member of the China Marines. In 1962 Jim wanted a 12 string guitar, but they were just too expensive, so he decided to make one. That was how he started making guitars as a hobby. He made either 306 or 307 guitars, plus he made an instrument called a dulcimer that has 4 strings and is played similar to a guitar. Jim was the printer for the City of Santa Cruz for almost 40 years. He printed every piece of paper the city used, including the parking tickets for the Police Dept. and all the letterheads for the different departments. He retired when he was 62 and spent all of his spare time making guitars.
