The Gretsch Committee Model 7628 (1977) is one of the most unique and collectible instruments from Gretsch’s late-1970s lineup. Known for its bold design and unconventional construction, the Committee stands apart from Gretsch’s hollowbody tradition, offering a solid, weighty build with a distinct tonal voice.
This Gretsch is in excellent overall condition. The only change is the tuners - a nice set of Grover tuners was added. The original tuners are in the case. The electronics are all original. Frets show light wear and are not in need of work. The neck is straight and the guitar plays really well after a quick setup. There is room in the truss rod for future neck relief adjustments.
Crafted with a multi-ply walnut and maple body, the Committee features a striking “sandwich” look with layered wood construction, paired with a set maple neck and ebony fingerboard. Outfitted with dual humbuckers, it delivers a powerful tone with sustain and clarity that differs from Gretsch’s Filter’Tron-based models, making it a favorite for players who want something outside the usual Gretsch sound.
The 7628’s design aesthetic—with its angular headstock and bold body style—embodies the late-’70s push toward innovation, making it a standout collectible today. With its original 1977 craftsmanship, this guitar is not just a player’s instrument but also a rare piece of Gretsch history from an experimental era.
At Mahar’s Vintage Guitars, every instrument is carefully inspected, photographed, and set up to professional standards so you can buy with confidence.
