Gibson 1982 Shaw NOS Patent Number Humbucker Gold

The Shaw NOS (New Old Stock) Patent Number humbucker in gold represents one of the most sought-after Gibson replacement and upgrade pickups available. Tim Shaw's late-'70s and early-'80s redesign of the PAF-era humbucker brought back scatter-wound coils, period-correct materials, and the kind of output and tonal balance that Gibson's CBS-era production had drifted away from. In a gold cover, this pickup carries the aesthetic of a late-'50s or early-'60s Gibson — and the construction to back it up. We have this one in excellent condition.

The Shaw-era Patent Number humbuckers are well-documented among collectors and players as the bridge between the original PAF and the modern high-output market. Tim Shaw rejoined Gibson in the late 1970s and set about reverse-engineering original PAF pickups, resulting in a design that used Alnico II magnets, vintage-spec wire, and scatter winding to replicate the warmth and dynamic sensitivity of the originals. NOS examples — meaning unused stock that has never been installed — are increasingly difficult to find and represent a genuine piece of Gibson's manufacturing history from that transitional period. The gold cover makes this a natural fit for Les Paul Custom, ES-series, or any build calling for gold hardware.

This pickup was stored since it was new.  We bought it from a Gibson dealer who stashed a pile of parts back in the 80s.  It sat with a plastic protective layer on the gold cover.  It left some residue, which we removed, and slightly discolored the cover.
