The ultimate Jazz Bass, the holy-grail!  The Stack Knob jazz bass is named as such in reference to the controls that disappeared from the model sometime in 1961.

The stacked knobs control concentric potentiometers.  You get one volume and one tone control for each pickup.  Balance between the bridge and neck pickup is adjusted by simply changing the volume of one or both pickups.

The bass is a beauty - stunning in person really.  The resonance of the piece is something to behold.

Neck and body dates are intact - neck date is 2-61 and in the body date is 3-61.

The original CTS potentiometers are in place, displaying the code 1376025, dating them to the 25th week of 1960.  All solders are original.  Mell signed one of the concentric pots - a name you'll see under the pickguards of many Pre CBS Fenders.

The neck has been professionally refinished.  It was subsequently played and shows wear that both looks and feels authentic, as if the neck was never refinished.  The frets and nut have been replaced.  The fretboard was spared any modification - it wasn't re-radiused or altered.  The tuners were changed to a modern set with the old mounting screw holes filled.  The logo is one that you'd see on a later Jazz bass, likely because the original logo style for the stack knob era bass is hard to find.  There is a typical, superficial crack near the low E tuner at the base of the headstock that appears to have been stabilized/glued or it is just superficial.

The body is completely original: the perfectly worn finish, pickups, pots, solders, bridge, strap buttons and the pickguard, which shows no cracks whatsoever.

The original case is included.  It isn't in the best shape, but I've see much worse!  The handle is changed, as is one latch.  It does securely hold the bass, but I'd recommend the use of a modern case for storage and transport for the next owner of this amazing piece.
