The Empress Effects ZOIA is a multi-FX pedal and virtual modular synthesizer with 3 footswitches, 80+ modules, and 64 user presets — a fundamentally different kind of device than a conventional pedal. The ZOIA is basically a modular synthesizer in pedal form. Instead of being a delay effect or tremolo, it provides the modules necessary to build a delay or tremolo from the ground up. But since you're the one building it, you can make it do whatever you want. With over 80 modules currently available, ZOIA can be everything from a simple fuzz or delay to a complex chain of effects, to a modular synthesizer or MIDI controller — it's all up to you to decide.

Empress has created modules for all your standard guitar effects, so if you want a phaser, you can just drop one in — you don't have to break out the textbooks to learn that they're built out of all-pass filters, though if you're inclined, you can build them that way yourself. The collection includes control sources such as LFOs, oscillators and envelope followers, alongside MIDI, CV and audio I/O, switches, analysers, a mixer, and various effects and processors. The on-board stompswitches can be used in either scrolling- or bank-style preset modes for quick on-the-fly patch recall, and an OLED display screen shows all module and parameter information for easy editing.
