This 1987 Boss DD-3 Digital Delay, the Version 1 Made in Japan blue-label model, is one of the earliest and most collectible DD-3 variants ever produced. Sharing much of its DNA with the iconic DD-2, the V1 DD-3 uses the same high-quality digital processing approach that gave early Boss delays their warm yet ultra-clear repeats. These first-run units are prized for their superior components, build quality, and unmistakably musical response—making them one of the most sought-after compact delays of the 1980s.
The pedal is in excellent condition. The serial number sticker is still present in the battery compartment.
Offering up to 800ms of delay with intuitive controls for Delay Time, Feedback, and Effect Level, the DD-3 V1 delivers everything from slapback to lush, ambient trails. The repeats are articulate without harshness, sitting perfectly in a live or studio mix. This 1987 example remains in excellent working condition and retains the original blue label, the definitive marker of true MIJ production.
Players consistently praise early DD-3 units: “Version 1 MIJ is the sweet spot” (The Gear Page), “Closest to a DD-2 without spending DD-2 money” (Reddit r/Guitar), “The most musical digital delay ever in a pedal” (Harmony Central), “Still unbeatable for clean, clear repeats” (Ultimate Guitar), and “Built to outlive all of us” (MyLesPaul Forum).
Delay pedals like the DD-3 have shaped the sound of The Edge, John Frusciante, Johnny Marr, and Nels Cline, becoming a studio and touring essential.
