This 1964 Ampeg R-15R Superbreverb is an outstanding example of Ampeg’s early-’60s tube combo engineering—an amp known for its massive clean headroom, lush onboard reverb, and unmistakably rich 1x15" warmth. With a 25-watt cathode-biased circuit and a single 15-inch speaker, the R-15R produces deep lows and articulate highs, making it a favorite for surf, jazz, blues, and roots players who appreciate Ampeg’s ultra-clean tonal personality.

This example was serviced on the way into the shop.  Pots and tube sockets were cleaned.  Coupling caps were swapped out, and a couple resistors replaced.  The tremolo needed a little work and is now fully functional.  The transformers and speaker are original.

The early-’60s Superbreverb series marked Ampeg’s move toward more versatile guitar amplifiers, adding their spacious “Echo” reverb and refined preamp voicing. This model delivers shimmering cleans, touch-sensitive breakup at higher volumes, and big low end that only a 15" speaker can produce. The original components and vintage circuitry give this amp a warm, dimensional tone that stands apart from Fender and Gibson amps of the same era.

Historically, Ampeg amps were embraced by jazz greats such as Wes Montgomery and players seeking high-fidelity tube performance. While Fender dominated the rock market, Ampeg quietly built some of the most articulate and musical clean amps of the 1960s. The R-15R sits among the company’s most respected mid-power combos and remains a sleeper favorite among vintage amp collectors.

At Mahar’s Vintage Guitars, every amp is inspected, tested, and photographed accurately. Explore our Fender Amplifiers Collection, Vintage Fender Guitars, or Sell or Trade Your Gear page.

Shipping policy:

When you purchase this item you are hereby agreeing to this shipping policy. We remove tubes from amps that could be damaged in shipping.  These cases require the buyer to re-install them on delivery - it is very easy with this amp, and we label them so you know exactly where to put them.  We do this because we have experienced shipping issues in the past, and this is our prevention measure.  Vintage amps are sold as-is because they can need service intermittently.  Everything is tested here in our shop on the way into our inventory, and again before shipping.  We will cover shipping damage, but we cannot be responsible for the failure of vintage components in 20-to-50-plus year old amps. Shipments will require signature on delivery, no exceptions.  If there is damage, the buyer must retain all packing materials intact and picture them immediately and send them to sales@maharsvintageguitars.com.  Less than 1% of our shipments are damaged in transit, and we are committed to making sure your item arrives safely, but we are taking these additional measures to make sure you are happy with your purchase.
