SOLD - Gretsch Duo Jet 6128T 2008 Made in Japan Relic'd
$0.00This guitar business is rewarding in so many ways, meeting good people and making new friends is at the top of the list. I bought this guitar from just such a person.
He conveyed a story that goes with this guitar: "The story I got on this one, from a reputable source, is that this MIJ factory Gretsch Duo Jet ($3,000+ when new) guitar was given to a Gretsch endorsee in 2008 who liked it a lot but thought it was too shiny and new looking. That guy was friends with one of the builders in the Gretsch USA Custom shop (not Steven Stern) and he asked him if he would relic the guitar. The Gretsch Custom Shop builder said that, while could not "officially" relic the guitar, he would like to do it for practice as he was just learning how to do relic-ing. They hooked it up and the guy did a really nice job on a light/medium relic and, while he was at it, pinned the bridge. He also did some, apparently quite usual, type of mod to the tone switch that bypasses the upper position (?)... I'm not sure why but it seems to be something that's done to Duo Jets...probably easily reversible if anyone wants to).
So, what we have here is a high-quality Japanese reissue of the Duo Jet with all original parts, a couple small mods/improvements, and relic work that does a really good job of making the 14 year old guitar look vintage. The benefit is largely found in the fact that the guitar plays as good or better than most vintage Gretsch guitars I've had over the years, but it has that look. The guitar is light and comfortable to play and has a nice, soft V neck.
The guitar came in with paperwork, but the certificate was for another Gretsch with a different serial number. This happened with another similar Gretsch last year that traded in. The shop that sold it new mixed up the cert with that of another guitar. Gretsch provided my customer with a replacement cert. I assume they still do this...
