Lakland has been building serious basses in Chicago since 1994, and the Skyline series represents the company's offshore production line.  These are Korean-built instruments that apply Lakland's design philosophy and quality control to a more accessible price point without abandoning the specifications that make Lakland basses genuinely different from the standard Fender-derived alternatives. The 55-01 is the five-string entry point into the Skyline lineup, and it is built around two specifications that set it apart from most production five-strings: the 35" scale length and the Lakland Dual Access bridge.

The 35" scale is the defining tonal specification for the 55-01. The additional scale length increases string tension across all five strings, which on a B string specifically produces the tight, focused, piano-like low B character that 34" scale five-strings consistently struggle to achieve. String tension at 35" keeps the B string sounding like a note rather than a loosely vibrating rope — a practical and audible difference that players who have played both scale lengths consistently describe as immediately and unmistakably different for the low end.

The Lakland Dual Access bridge allows stringing through the body or through the bridge — two distinct tonal options from the same instrument, with body-through stringing adding sustain and low-end warmth and bridge-through providing a slightly brighter, more immediate attack. The Bartolini MK-1 split-coil soapbar pickups provide the hum-cancelling character and warm, detailed tone that Bartolini is known for in the bass pickup world, driven by the five-knob active preamp — volume, blend, treble, mid, and bass — for comprehensive tonal shaping. Hipshot Licensed Ultralight tuners keep the headstock weight in check on a 35" five-string that could otherwise become neck-heavy. Flat-sawn maple neck with graphite reinforcement bars for dimensional stability, 10"-12" compound radius maple fingerboard, 22 frets, 1-3/4" nut. Action set at 3/32" on the first string and 4/32" on the fifth at the twelfth fret. At 9 lbs 6.5 oz this is a well-balanced five-string. Non-original generic hardshell case in excellent condition included.

We set the bass up, which worked out easily and perfectly, and added a new set of strings.  This bass is good to go!
