The Westbury Custom S from 1981 is a high-quality Japanese-made guitar from the renowned Matsumoku factory, famous for producing some of the finest MIJ instruments of the late 1970s and early 1980s. With its solid construction, set neck, and dual humbuckers, the Custom S delivers rich sustain, articulate mids, and versatile tones suitable for blues, rock, and jazz alike.
The guitar plays really well. The original frets are in excellent shape. The neck is straight and the truss rod has room for future neck relief adjustments. The screws on the output jack have been replaced. Wiring has been resoldered throughout the cavity, but everything works as it should.
There is an area on the lower bout, on the front of the guitar where the finish chipped and the wood was touched up. Several smaller chips on the back edge were also touched up. There are some surface scratches on the back of the neck where the neck transitions to the headstock. Other dings are present - see the pics for details.
I think the stopbar tailpiece was replaced - it just looks too shiny. The DiMarzio pickups are more recent than the guitar.
The Matsumoku era is celebrated among collectors for outstanding craftsmanship that rivaled and often surpassed U.S.-made instruments of the time. The Custom S features elegant binding, quality tonewoods, and reliable electronics, making it both a player’s workhorse and a collectible vintage piece.
This guitar represents the golden age of Japanese guitar making, when brands like Westbury, Aria Pro II, and Greco pushed the boundaries of precision and design. Whether you’re a player looking for a unique vintage instrument or a collector seeking a fine example of Matsumoku craftsmanship, this Westbury Custom S is a standout find.
At Mahar’s Vintage Guitars, every instrument is carefully inspected, professionally photographed, and fully set up to ensure top playability and authenticity.
