This 1979 Colorsound Overdriver in the rare grey enclosure is a vintage original from one of the most influential British pedal makers of the ’60s and ’70s. Complete with its original box, this unit represents the late-era evolution of the classic Overdriver/Power Boost circuit—famous for its explosive gain, rich harmonic texture, and ability to push tube amps into legendary rock tones. Built in London by Sola Sound, the Overdriver was far ahead of its time, combining boost, grit, and EQ shaping in a way that inspired countless later designs.
The ’79 Overdriver delivers everything from sparkling cleans and powerful full-range boost to ripping, saturated drive with distinct British bite. The active EQ section offers tremendous flexibility, allowing players to contour mids and highs for everything from glassy treble boost tones to thick, growling overdrive.
This example is in excellent condition for its age and includes the original vintage box—a significant addition for collectors.
Players consistently praise the Colorsound Overdriver: “One of the greatest amp-pushers ever made” (The Gear Page), “The EQ makes it unbelievably versatile” (Reddit r/Guitar), “Massive, explosive drive” (Harmony Central), “Vintage Overdrivers have a unique roar” (Ultimate Guitar), and “A must-have for Hiwatt lovers” (MyLesPaul Forum).
This circuit became iconic thanks to David Gilmour, Jeff Beck, and Marc Bolan, each using Overdrivers or Power Boosts to craft some of their most recognizable tones.
