The Guild F-50R is one of the great American jumbo acoustic guitars — a 17-1/4" body built in Westerly, Rhode Island at the peak of Guild's American production, with a specification that puts it squarely in conversation with the best dreadnoughts and jumbos Martin and Gibson were making at the same time.
Guild built the F-50 and its rosewood-bodied F-50R variant from the early 1960s through the early 1980s, and the Westerly-made examples from this era are consistently regarded by Guild collectors as the finest the company produced.
This 1980 example carries a factory double pickguard, a factory option that appears periodically on Guild jumbos of this period and is specific enough to attract buyers who know and collect these instruments. The label is marked as such.
The guitar sounds tremendous and articulate. It plays perfectly as well.
The construction is the full F-50R specification: solid Sitka spruce top over solid Indian rosewood back and sides, three-piece mahogany and walnut neck, ebony fingerboard with the distinctive mother-of-pearl block and abalone triangle inlays that are one of the most visually striking fingerboard treatments on any American flat-top of the era, gold hardware, and the complete Guild binding treatment throughout. At 17-1/4" across the lower bout and 5" deep this is a large guitar with the fullness and bass response that only a true jumbo body produces — warmer and rounder than a dreadnought in the low end, with the ebony board and rosewood combination producing a focused, articulate midrange and clear treble that carries well in a room.
We've done everything necessary to ready this guitar for the next 46 years. A top crack was professionally repaired. The neck has just received a fresh reset, which is the correct and expected maintenance for a 45-year-old acoustic and returns the guitar to proper playing geometry. The bridge was re-glued, and a new compensated saddle installed. The original frets are in excellent shape. There is room in the truss rod for future neck relief adjustment. Action is set at 3/32" on both strings at the twelfth fret. A Barcus-Berry under saddle passive pickup was installed prior to the guitar's arrival here— non-original, fully functional, and removable if a future owner prefers a clean acoustic setup. A non-original hardshell case is included.
