This 1976 Gibson Les Paul Custom in Sunburst is a stunning example from the Norlin era, combining the elegant “Black Beauty” styling with a vibrant burst finish and classic construction. Featuring a mahogany body with a maple top, mahogany neck, ebony fretboard, and multi-ply binding, this Custom delivers the sustain, clarity, and punch players expect from a vintage Les Paul. Gold hardware, block inlays, and split-diamond headstock inlay complete the timeless aesthetic.
The original patent-stamped T-Top humbuckers are original and unmolested. They're stamped "Williamsville" - pickups that were made in a former Moog Music factory in Williamsville, NY, which Gibson used for a short period in the 1970s to manufacture some of its products. The control cavity is also 100% original, with pots dated to 1976.
The only change on the guitar are the frets, which are of appropriate width and a bit more height than the low, 70s frets.
The guitar shows very little use - it is in amazing shape. The color of this cherry sunburst is the best I've seen. The red portion of the burst shows up WAY more in pics than it does in person - it looks more like a 50s burst to us and doesn't scream "clown burst" like others from the period.
The back - that piece of mahogany is gorgeous, with a beautiful flamey figure to it.
The neck is perfect - the guitar plays wonderfully. There is room in the truss rod for future neck relief adjustments.
At nearly 50 years old, this guitar has developed the resonance and character only time can create. It shows light cosmetic wear expected from vintage ownership but remains structurally solid, with excellent frets and comfortable low action.
At Mahar’s Vintage Guitars, this guitar has been fully inspected, set up, and photographed accurately. We buy and accept trades on vintage and high-end Gibson guitars.
