The Gibson Hummingbird was introduced in 1960 as Gibson's first square-shoulder dreadnought. The design was Gibson's answer to Martin's dominance of the large-body acoustic market. Gibson made it distinctive with a hand-painted pickguard design that has made it one of the most visually recognizable acoustic guitars ever produced.
The Hummingbird's combination of mahogany back and sides, spruce top, and the square-shoulder body that produces a powerful, punchy low end with a clear, present midrange. The mid-1970s saw the Hummingbird available in various colors including cherry red sunburst, red wine, gold top, and others.
In 1975, Gibson changed their necks from mahogany to maple on most models. The neck contributes a slightly brighter character to the overall voice of the guitar versus the mahogany version from the year prior. The block inlays on the bound rosewood fingerboard are correct for post-1973 production. Grover tuners are original. The original Hummingbird design pickguard is intact and correct. The cherry sunburst finish is original and in good overall condition.
There is a top crack repair, visible in the photos. The repair has been completed and the top is structurally sound, but the crack and the repair are both visible and are priced into this instrument accordingly. The back and sides are clean with no repairs. The neck is a medium C profile at .851" at the first fret and .969" at the ninth, with a 12" radius rosewood fingerboard. Action is set at 2/32" on the treble string and 3/32" on the bass string at the twelfth fret. At 4 lbs 15 oz this is a light instrument for its body size.
An original Gibson hardshell case is included.
