The Fender Champ is one of the most recorded amplifiers in history. Five watts, one 6V6 power tube, one 12AX7 preamp tube, one 5Y3 rectifier, a single volume knob, and an 8" speaker — an amplifier that is so simple and so sonically right. The Champ circuit was essentially unchanged from 1955 until 1964, when Fender replaced it with the redesigned AA764 blackface Champ later in the year - this is an early AA764.

This example carries no Fender logo on the cabinet — a specific variant that occurred only in 1964.  The original black tolex and original grille are intact. The upper back panel has been changed to what appears to be a late 60s Fender Champ back panel..

Original power and output transformers, both dated to 1964 and confirmed in the photos. The filter cap can has been replaced — correct and necessary maintenance on a 60-year-old amp. Electrolytic bypass caps were also changed out.  A grounded power cable was added as well.  This represents up to $200 worth of work that all these amps require for reliable operation into the future - these parts were not intended to use forever.

The pots and knobs are original.  We tested the vintage RCA 6V6 power tube and RCA 5Y3 rectifier tube — they are period-correct and tested strong. The speaker is a Jensen C8R from 1965.  This is a replacement that is far beefier and better sounding than the original, one year removed from the amp's production date. At 13 lbs this is the compact, portable format the Champ was designed to be — a studio-quality instrument amp that breaks up beautifully at volumes that don't require hearing protection.

Champs from this era sell readily - don't sleep on this one!

Shipping policy:

When you purchase this item you are hereby agreeing to this shipping policy. We remove tubes from amps that could be damaged in shipping.  These cases require the buyer to re-install them on delivery - it is very easy with this amp, and we label them so you know exactly where to put them.  We do this because we have experienced shipping issues in the past, and this is our prevention measure.  Vintage amps are sold as-is because they can need service intermittently.  Everything is tested here in our shop on the way into our inventory, and again before shipping.  We will cover shipping damage, but we cannot be responsible for the failure of vintage components in 20-to-50-plus year old amps. Shipments will require signature on delivery, no exceptions.  If there is damage, the buyer must retain all packing materials intact and picture them immediately and send them to sales@maharsvintageguitars.com.  Less than 1% of our shipments are damaged in transit, and we are committed to making sure your item arrives safely, but we are taking these additional measures to make sure you are happy with your purchase.
