This Gallagher 1982 Doc Watson Herringbone Dreadnought in natural is in excellent condition. This is a really good sounding guitar that plays extremely well too.
It has a spruce top with binding, mahogany back and sides, a mahogany neck with a deep C profile, and an ebony fretboard. The finish, tuners, nut and bridge are all original, and it weighs 4 lbs 12 oz.
J.W. Gallagher was a furniture maker in Wartrace, Tennessee, and he built his first guitar in 1965. Doc Watson started playing a Gallagher G-50 in 1968, and that guitar, nicknamed “Old Hoss,” is the one you hear on Will the Circle Be Unbroken. In 1974 Gallagher built Doc a new guitar with a neck made to his specs, and that became the first Doc Watson model. It has the 1-3/4" nut and herringbone trim Doc liked, and it’s the most recognized guitar the company makes. This one dates to 1982, when J.W.’s son Don was running the shop, so it comes from the early years of the model. It’s a big, balanced flatpicking dreadnought, and it’s easy to hear why Doc stuck with these!
There is a small crack at the end of the fretboard on the bass side. It comes with what we assume is the original case, which is in very good condition.
