Grown at altitude in the Carpathian mountain range of Eastern Europe, Carpathian spruce is rarer and more expensive than either Adirondack or Sitka and was chosen specifically because it combines the projection and clarity of Adirondack with the warmth and responsiveness of Italian alpine spruce — two qualities that typically trade off against each other in a single tonewood, unified here in one exceptional top. The Madagascar rosewood back and sides were selected for their tonal resemblance to pre-ban Brazilian rosewood — the dense, resonant, visually spectacular wood that made the pre-war Martins legendary — and for the spectacular figure that Madagascar sets consistently produce.
