worked out the way I hoped.  I assume that my direct outreach wasn't on a priority list for him, which is completely understandable. \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eBut, I would say this: Why would anyone write that on the speaker?  There is no good reason to fake it.  When I traded the amp in, the previous owner had said he had heard that Mr Trower had used the amp in the studio as the overdrive was something that couldn't be replicated elsewhere.  That is definitely true - this amp absolutely rips and blows minds!  It has been a blast plugging people into it in the shop!\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eSo, Trower or no Trower, the amp is a beast, and a rare one at that.  594 GA-80s were made by Gibson in total.  1959 was the first year of production - 282 were more and more power.  So started the attempts to make a 100-watt amp, but due to the limitations in transformer supplies, and our personal lack of experience (remember - in 1964 we were still only third-year City \u0026amp; Guilds students), the first units were in fact a standard preamp with 2x 50-watt output stages on the same chassis.  However, this soon changed.  All new models produced at this time were designed by tweaking a bit here, pinching a circuit there, and different cabinet configurations.  By introducing the EL34 valve and the correct balance of output transformer and feed voltages, the 100-watt amp was born.\"  \u003cem\u003e\"The History of Marshall\" by Michael Doyle and Nick Bowcott\u003c\/em\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eGetting to this amp - what you see first when you check out the chassis is the incredibly girthy power transformer.  This Hammertone Radio Spares unit is present from the very first 100 watt prototyes through early 1966, when a Drake 1204-43 power transformer was introduced. \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe output transformer appears to be the Drake 1202-84, as used in the earliest single-output transformer version (version 3A).  The choke could be the Drake 352-114 as used in version 3B as opposed to the Radiospares 20H from version 3A.  I'm not certain of this as the only cosmetic difference I can see between the two is the coloration and shape of the strap that holds the transformer to the chassis.  I will consult my amp tech to see if I can determine which it is by checking the impedance (the Drake is 110 ohms and the Radiospares is 690 ohms).  Measuring the screen voltages would be another indicator, as the higher impedance Radiospares choke leads to lower screen voltages.  It is likely that the choke is the 3A version's Radiospares 20h, however, and my judging what it is by looking at the color of the strap is foolhardy. \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe transformers are all undeniably original.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eEither way, it seems that this is fundamentally a 3A version, which avoids the higher voltages present in the 3B version, which is known to eat modern tubes.  \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eCosmetics absolutely confirm that it is an early version, particularly the two Vox style vents on the cabinet, a feature that changed to a single vent.  Furthermore, mustard cap date codes are from the third quarter of 1964.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe History of Marshall book states that Version 3A has serial numbers ranging from 6600 through 6800 and 3B's serial numbers range from 6600 through 7100.  That said, serial numbers are the worst way to date these amps as they were not applied in any discreet order.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThis amp was part of the deep collection, one of the most prized pieces.  It is in truly exceptional condition compared to others you see from later years - you just don't see any from '65.  The circuit is nearly untouched with only sparse maintenance updates.  There are no unruly mods, no extra holes drilled in the chassis, nothing destructive as you see in so many vintage Marshalls.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe cabinet and tolex is similarly original and clean.  There may have been some minor work done around the logo at one point.  I will add some photos of this area.  Everything else, from the feet, to the vent grilles, to the handle - it is all original.  The screws that hold the chassis to the cabinet - they are mismatched. Two of them appear to be original.  There are only two screws holding the back panel on the cabinet.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe aluminum chassis that these early amps are built upon take some abuse from the weight of the transformers and careless handling.  This one is in great shape, showing some distortion but nothing debilitating.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eIn order to spare the amp from potential issues, we have used the amp only once, running it on a variac at 115v.  This is a nod to the fact that original caps remain throughout.  Regular use will require replacement of electrolytic caps and a thorough check of performance there after to identify any other maintenance needs.  I am of the mind to keep the amp as-is, at least for the time being.  Service could be arranged for the next owner if that person does not have a trusted amp tech to tackle the job.  \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eWhen we did use the amp, holy wow - it was a feast for the ears as you might imagine.  There is a character to plexi amps that is unmistakable.  This amp has IT - huge, bold cleans that are unparalleled to the sickest output distortion.  Somewhat surprisingly, the amp runs pretty quiet.  There is a variance between the tone you get from each of the four channels.  This is very likely something that is caused by drift in components in each channel, that would be ironed out when serviced.  Channel 3 is the star, and it sounds amazing.  The  tone and presence controls are effective and give a great range of variability.  \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThis is a good comparison of Marshall PA heads versus Lead and Bass models:\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cspan\u003eThe earliest plexi panel JMP's like the Super Lead, Super Bass and Super PA where electronically the same:\u003c\/span\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cspan\u003e- 820R\/330uf shared cathode on V1\u003c\/span\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cspan\u003e- 22nF coupling caps after V1 on both bright and normal channel (on PA's they are all normal channels)\u003c\/span\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cspan\u003e- first use of 470K mixer resistors\u003c\/span\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cspan\u003e- 250pF\/56K in the tone stack\u003c\/span\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cspan\u003e- 100nF coupling caps in the power amp\u003c\/span\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cspan\u003e- 27K negative feedback resistor on the 16 Ohm tap\u003c\/span\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cspan\u003eThe minor differences on those amps were that the:\u003c\/span\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cspan\u003e- Super Bass had an 470pF treble peak capacitor on the mixer of the bright channel\u003c\/span\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cspan\u003e- Super Lead had an 470pF treble peak capacitor on the mixer of the bright channel plus a bright cap of 100pF on the bright channel volume pot\u003c\/span\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cspan\u003e- Super PA had an additional preamp tube with also 2 channels; Its power and output transformers were reverse-engineered, duplicating the Radio Spare units in his original Marshall. Circuit boards are cut from the same 1\/8″ stock, purchased from the same manufacturer, staked with RS turret lugs, and hand-wired using the correct layout and lead dress. The plexi faceplate is reverse-screened, with font and spacing identical the original. The aluminum chassis is also identical, and 13-ply Baltic birch is used for the flawlessly fingerjointed cabinet. The BAC 18 is available in all of the common Marshallesque configurations – 1×12″, 2×10″, 2×12″, 1×15″ – and as a separate head. Bacino also builds a 2×12″ extension cabinet. Other shared traits include cover color options (black, white, orange, red, purple, green) and grillecloth (including a duplication of the famous “Bluesbreaker” grille).\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe BAC 18 is a two-channel amp. Its A channel has two “High” inputs, plus one volume and one tone control. Channel B has one “High” input and one “Low” input, plus one volume and one tone control. Channel B also features a vibrato circuit with controls for speed and intensity. An on\/off vibrato footswitch is hard-wired to the chassis, just as on the original.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe BAC 18 sports a retro aesthetic, and in terms of construction is very sturdy. Peering inside is like looking into an old Marshall; everything is tidy and authentic.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eBacino spares no expense in terms of components. Our test amp sported hard-wired Celestion G12 Alnico Blue and G12H Anniversary speakers. The tube complement consisted of two JJ EL84 output tubes, one JJ 12AX7 and two GT 12AX7M tubes; one as the phase inverter, the other as the tremolo channel’s input stage and oscillator. A new old stock (NOS) International Servicemaster-branded Mullard 6CA4 serves as the rectifier tube. NOS power and preamp tubes are available, while coupling capacitors are by Mallory and Audience Auricaps, along with electrolytic capacitors by JJ, F\u0026amp;T, Rifa, and Sprague.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eTo the heart of the matter at hand – the amp’s sound – we used a late-’70s Ibanez Artist with Wolftone humbuckers, and an early-’70s Fender Stratocaster. We plugged into channel one with the Ibanez and set the tone midway.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eMoving the volume control toward maximum, we were greeted with the expected increase in overdrive saturation; great vintage plexi tone, especially with the volume knob between 8 o’clock and 10 o’clock, with even breakup and fantastic note separation.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eLooking to dial in a bit more “fatitude,” we plugged into the B channel and again set the tone midway. The tone again fattened as the volume knob moved clockwise. But then, as the knob approached 8 o’clock , the BAC 18 revealed just what British tone is all about – and why the original Marshalls are so soughtafter: full and fat, with smooth, balanced overdrive and fabulous note separation. The notes practically jumped out of the amp! “What about harmonics?” you ask. How ’bout rich and completely in-your-face? Presence is downright addictive regardless of pickup position, and touch sensitivity is stunning.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eBacking off the volume, the amp cleans up nicely. This amp doesn’t have – and doesn’t need – a true clean channel.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eAs we backed off the tone control of the bridge pickup, we discovered definitive “woman tone.” The BAC 18 doesn’t produce a lot of gain, but with a good overdrive pedal, it should do so very well.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eGoing in, we were skeptical about how the BAC 18 would sound with the Stratocaster. But we plugged it in and were again greeted with fat and full, but with an added clarity and sparkle. Notes popped with a responsiveness we haven’t heard in any amp before. The neck and middle pickups sounded best.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eWe found the tremolo circuit very smooth and pulsing. We couldn’t slow it down to the point where some may like, but again, here the BAC 18 resembles the Marshall 1958. Besides, tremolo is\u003cspan\u003e \u003c\/span\u003e\u003ci\u003enot\u003c\/i\u003e\u003cspan\u003e \u003c\/span\u003ewhat this amp is all about. As the 6119 Tennessean was transitioning from the early, single-pickup version to the Electrotone-bodied version in the early 60s, there was apparently some movement at Gretsch HQ to drop the 6119 and instead offer an all-new 6113 model. This reportedly created a bit of kerfuffle with Chet Atkins regarding royalties, so the 6113 was shelved and the twin-pickup 6119 Tennessean we know and love picked up where the stillborn 6113 left off.
